Spring Motorcycle Maintenance: Checklist Before the Riding Season Begins

Spring is here, and motorcycles are returning to the roads after their winter break. In my previous article, I covered rust removal and regaining riding confidence after a long pause. Before you head out for a rust-removal ride, it’s essential to ensure that your motorcycle is technically sound after the winter. A thorough spring maintenance check guarantees a safe and trouble-free start to the riding season.

Below is a list of the most common checkpoints – make sure to inspect at least these before your first ride.

1. General Condition and External Checks

  • Check the overall condition of the motorcycle: fairings, hoses, and chains.
  • Look for possible rust spots, loose bolts, and leaks.
  • Ensure there are no damages from winter storage.

2. Fuel System

  • Check the fuel quality and replace it with fresh fuel if necessary.
  • Change the fuel filter if needed.
  • Inspect the fuel tank and consider using a cleaning additive.

3. Battery and Electrical Components

  • Check the battery charge and recharge if necessary.
  • Measure the battery voltage with a multimeter.
  • Ensure the battery is securely mounted and connections are intact.
  • Test the headlights, turn signals, and brake lights.

4. Tires and Wheels

  • Measure tire pressure and verify the correct values in the manual.
  • Check the tire tread depth (minimum 1 mm).
  • Remove stones from the tire grooves and check the tire age (tires over five years old are recommended for replacement).

5. Brakes

  • Test the brake function.
  • Inspect the brake pads and discs for wear.
  • Replace brake fluid if necessary (typically every two years).
  • Ensure the brake light is working.

6. Chains and Belts

  • Clean and lubricate the chain, check for correct tension.
  • Inspect the belt’s condition and tension if the bike has a belt drive.

7. Oils and Other Fluids

  • Change the engine oil and oil filter if it was not done in the fall.
  • Check the coolant level and replace if needed.
  • Change the final drive oil if the bike has a shaft drive.

8. Steering and Controls

  • Check steering operation by turning the handlebars from side to side.
  • Ensure smooth operation of the throttle and clutch.
  • Lubricate cables and levers.

9. Other Inspections and Finishing Touches

  • Check the air filter’s condition.
  • Replace spark plugs if necessary.
  • Adjust mirrors and test the horn.
  • Wash the motorcycle and lubricate the chain afterward.
  • Start the engine and check for any fluid leaks.
  • Take a short test ride to check the brakes and engine function.

10. Insurance and Safety

  • Ensure your motorcycle insurance is valid.
  • Check that your safety gear (helmet, riding suit, gloves, boots) is intact and in good condition.

Common Starting Problems and Solutions

  • If the engine does not start, check the fuel quality, battery charge, and spark plugs.
  • Old fuel can cause starting issues.
  • If the fuel has a strong smell, the spark plugs may be flooded.
  • Use a jump starter if necessary.

Summary

Spring maintenance is essential to ensure a safe riding season. A thorough inspection extends the lifespan of your motorcycle and ensures you can enjoy riding with peace of mind. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and don’t hesitate to consult a professional if any aspect of the inspection feels uncertain.

Safe travels and great riding weather!
